Tonight at Shabbat services, members of our Mishlachat (Israeli Staff Delegation) will stand before GFC and share reflections from a summer that has changed them in ways they never expected.
Before those stories are shared, we wanted to offer our broader GFC community a glimpse into the themes that have emerged over the past two months. Wherever you are reading this, we hope you can feel a little bit of the magic that has defined this summer for these staff members.
If there is one thread that runs through so many of the conversations we’ve had with our Mishlachat this summer, it is belonging.
Many arrived at camp leaving behind familiar communities in Israel and stepping into an entirely new environment. What they found here was something that felt surprisingly familiar: a place where people look out for one another, where friendships form quickly, and where everyone is invited to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Over the course of the summer, they have spoken often about community. Through shared responsibilities, late-night conversations, laughter, challenges, and celebrations, they discovered what generations of campers and staff have already learned: camp has a way of bringing people together.
They’ve reflected on friendships that appeared when they least expected them. On the courage it takes to introduce yourself to someone new. On the realization that sometimes the people who make the biggest impact on our lives begin as complete strangers.
They’ve also shared something more personal: what it feels like to be accepted for who you are.
Several of the reflections that our camp community will hear tonight explore the pressure many people feel to fit in, to be perfect, or to worry about what others think. One of the gifts of camp is that it creates space for authenticity. It reminds us that our differences strengthen our community and that being ourselves is more than enough.
Another theme that has surfaced throughout the summer is gratitude.
Gratitude for friendships that crossed oceans. Gratitude for campers who challenged and inspired them. Gratitude for the people and communities that helped shape who they are becoming. Gratitude for the ordinary moments that often turn out to be the ones we remember forever.
Some of the stories shared tonight will be joyful. Others will be deeply moving. Together, they reflect a summer filled with growth, connection, resilience, friendship, and purpose.
This evening will also mark an important moment for GFC as we celebrate a transition in Camp Committee leadership. We will thank Neal Spielman for his years of service, partnership, and dedication to GFC while welcoming Hilary Kamin as our incoming Camp Committee Chair.
Neal’s leadership has helped guide camp through seasons of growth, challenge, and opportunity, always keeping campers and community at the center of our work. As Hilary prepares to step into this role, she does so with a deep love for GFC and a commitment to ensuring that future generations experience the same sense of connection and belonging that so many of us cherish.
It feels especially fitting that this transition takes place on an evening dedicated to hearing from our Mishlachat. So many of their reflections center on community, relationships, and the responsibility we have to care for and strengthen the places we call home. Those same values have shaped Neal’s leadership and will continue to guide GFC into its next chapter under Hilary’s direction.
The reflections our Mishlachat will share tonight are ultimately about people: the people who become friends, the people who become mentors, the people who become family, and the people who help us feel at home.That has always been the heart of GFC.
As one chapter begins to close and another gets ready to start, we are grateful for every person who helps make this community what it is, and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter of Greene Family Camp will bring.
