Join URJ Greene Family Camp on an incredible experience in New Orleans, LA, URJ Jacobs camp in Utica MS, and a trip to the beach in Galveston, TX! Mitzvah Corps is open to all rising 10th – graduating 12th graders.
This first-ever partnership between GFC and Mitzvah Corps begins with 3 days at GFC in Bruceville, TX where we’ll get to know each other and our experienced staff, and prepare for the trip ahead.
We then travel by charter bus to New Orleans, where we will create lasting relationships while exploring the historic city of New Orleans. We will learn about the complexities of its racial and socio-economic dynamics, and the ongoing disaster relief that is too often unnoticed. We’ll experience first hand the resilience of this culturally rich and vibrant community, and work alongside individuals and organizations who have taken it upon themselves to restore and revitalize their neighborhoods in uniquely impactful ways.
This program delves into the complexities of disaster preparedness, immediate response, and ongoing relief. Using Hurricane Katrina as a foundation of the experience, participants will explore New Orleans’ unique cultural, political, and racial history, learn from a variety of local leaders and residents about the hurricane’s immediate and lasting impact on the different communities within the city, and engage in meaningful work with grassroots organizations that are rebuilding and improving not only physical infrastructure, but social services, opportunities for youth, and the energy that defines a culture.
Finally, we will spend one night at our sister camp, URJ Henry S. Jacobs Camp in Utica, MS, debrief our experience, and get to know fellow Jewish teens from across the South.
Join us for this brand new partnership between GFC and Mitzvah Corps. We look forward to encountering and learning about Southern Judaism and the issues facing their communities from our peers, our staff, and our new experiences.
