Bunk Counselor

Background: 

URJ Greene Family Camp is a residential, Jewish summer camp located in Bruceville, TX that serves ages 7-18 between ten days and three and a half weeks on-site during the summer. We strive to create a healthy, nurturing environment for campers and staff to try new activities, build meaningful relationships, and grow their Jewish identities. We are seeking qualified candidates to join our team as Bunk Counselors.

 

Position Summary: 

Our bunk counselors are the heart of our camp program and ensure that every camper is happy, healthy, and is acclimating to the camp environment well. Living in-bunk and involved most intimately with our campers as individuals, counselors essentially serve as a surrogate parent for children while they are at camp. In addition to connecting with and advocating for each individual campers, counselors lead the bunk unit of 10-12 campers from wakeup, to designing innovative bunk activities, to bedtime traditions and everything in between.

 

Qualifications:

· Skill and ability in working with children. Ability to communicate with, relate to, and serve as an example.

· Ability to serve as an adult role model for all campers.

· Willingness to ability to take full responsibility for the lives of campers. Common sense, safety-consciousness, and high moral character required.

· Ability to accept guidance and support. Willingness and ability to ask for help.

· Ability to work well with co-counselors and other staff members.

· Counselors must be 18 or entering college freshman.

 

Responsibilities:

· Communicate with, relate to and serve as a positive role model to all campers.

· Help campers build friendships, become acclimated to life at camp and become part of the total camp community.

· Participate consistently and enthusiastically in all programs.

· Teach or assist in teaching electives and specialties. Plan and lead bunk activities.

· Facilitate a safe and fun environment at mealtimes, in the bunk and during unprogrammed times.

· Ensure the physical, mental and emotional health of all campers and work with Unit Head, Camp Care and Medical Team when concerns arise.

· Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify medical staff of suspected health problems. Help campers keep track of belongings.

· Act as “early-warning system” for campers with challenges. Refer to other staff when appropriate and communicate with the unit head when necessary.

· Directly responsible for cleanliness and good repair of camper cabin.

Activity Specialist

Background:

We strive to create a healthy, nurturing environment for campers and staff to try new activities, build meaningful relationships, and grow their Jewish identities. We are seeking qualified candidates to join our team as Activity Specialists.

 

Position Summary:

Activity specialists are responsible for planning, coordinating and teaching up to three daily classes to campers at varying ages and ability levels. Specialists may also be asked to assist in their program specialty area during free time. Specialists residing on camp will also have the role of being a bunk counselor, teaching in their specialty area during activity times.

 

Qualifications:

· Training and experience in the activity area. Teaching experience in that activity area desired.

· Strong enthusiasm for and broad-based knowledge of assigned specialty.

· Ability to follow defined teaching requirements, developing own methods of presentation to campers.

· When required, hold relevant certifications in activity area.

· Specialists residing on camp and serving as counselors must be 18 or entering college freshman.

 

Responsibilities:

· Plan, coordinate, and teach three 5-day courses in varying ages (7-10, 11-12, 13-14).

· Ensure the safety and upkeep of all appropriate equipment and classroom space.

· Submit timely supply requests when additional equipment is needed for activities.

· Act as a general resource for other camp activities relating to your specialty.

· Exercise good judgement and safety conscious at all times. Act as a role-model for safety with campers.

· Communicate with, relate to and serve as a positive role model to all campers.

· Ability to accept guidance and support from other staff members and from your supervisor. Willingness and ability to ask for help when needed

Avodah Counselor

Background: 

URJ Greene Family Camp is a residential, Jewish summer camp located in Bruceville, TX that serves ages 7-18 between ten days and three and a half weeks on-site during the summer. We strive to create a healthy, nurturing environment for campers and staff to try new activities, build meaningful relationships, and grow their Jewish identities. We are seeking qualified candidates to join our team as Avodah (Counselor-in-Training) Counselors.

Position Summary:

Our counselors are the heart of our camp program and ensure that every camper is happy, healthy, and is acclimating to the camp environment well. That Avodah Program is a transition of camper to counselor where Avodah campers participate in a Counselor In Training program. Living in-bunk and involved most intimately with our Avodahnikim as individuals, Avodah Counselors essentially serve as a mentor and guide for Avodahnikim while they are at camp. In addition to connecting with and advocating for each individual Avodahnikim, Avodah Counselors work with the Avodah Team (Avodah Counselors, Assistant Unit Head, Unit Head) to lead the bunk unit of 10-12 campers from wakeup, to designing innovative bunk actvities, to bedtime traditions and everything in between.

· Counselors must be 21.

 

Responsibilities:

· Communicate with, relate to and serve as a positive role model to all campers, including Avodahnikim.

· Help Avodahnikim build community, become acclimated to life at camp and become part of the total camp community.

· Work with the Avodah Team to create Avodah specific programming including Avodah meetings, cabin bonding, Avo-wishes, and nights out.

· Work with the Avodah Team to enforce all rules and policies, including but not limited to coverage assignments, curfew, and appropriate behavior.

· Attend all Avodah meetings and participate in the formulation and implementation of Avodah and camp policy.

· Ensure the physical, mental and emotional health of all Avodahnikim and work with Unit Head, Camp Care and Medical Team when concerns arise.

Background

Position Summary:

Units are the heart of camp – they unite bunks within an age group and most of the camper’s time at GFC is spent with the bunk and the unit. The Unit Head is responsible for overseeing everything the happens within the unit including programming, camper needs, and serving as a supervisor for counselors.

 

Qualifications:

· Strong background and experience in camping, education, and/or related fields.

· Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting.

· Ability to creatively plan and schedule programs and activities, and to maximize the skills and talents of staff members under your direct and indirect supervision.

· Ability to serve as an adult role model for all campers and staff members.

· Willingness to ability to take full responsibility for the lives of campers. Common sense, safety-consciousness, and high moral character required.

· Ability to give and receive guidance and support including constructive criticism. Willingness and ability to ask for help.

· Must be self-starter and able to work with a minimum of supervision. Must have leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel.

· A college graduate, preferably with strong background in field relevant to camp work.

 

Responsibilities:

Programming and Scheduling

· Directly responsible for planning, preparation, and implementation of all evening programs for assigned unit: serve as creative force. For programs planned by specialists (in consultation with Activities Director) and visiting Faculty (in consultation with them), ensure quality and age-appropriateness.

· Whenever possible, incorporate unit staff members in program planning and leadership. Prepare requisitions in timely manner. Ensure that all site and supply arrangements are made.

· Coordinate activities of bunks in unit: daytime activities of staff members, bunk activities, staff time-off.

 

Camper Needs

· Become directly involved with all campers and staff. Ongoing camper and staff problems are of particular concern.

· Communicate with the Camp Director and Counseling Director.

· Prepare and submit reports, forms, parent letters, articles, and evaluations as needed.

 

Supervisor

· Be a member of Program Administration.

o Attend meetings.

o Participate in formulation and implementation of camp policy.

· Serve as primary, direct supervisor for all counselors in the designated unit.

o Perform regular evaluations for these counselors.

o Act as role model for unit staff.

o Be “counselor’s counselor”, assisting unit staff with problems and questions.

· Act on behalf of unit on issues involving camp community. Run unit staff meetings.
