As I sit down to write this farewell blog, waves of nostalgia and gratitude wash over me. My time as the Assistant Director at Greene Family Camp has been nothing short of transformative, shaping both my personal and professional journey in ways I could have never imagined when I first stepped into this role.
From the very beginning (from my first summer as a Bonimer), Greene has provided me with a space to be my authentic self and given me some of my best friends. Growing up at camp, I felt the magic every time I passed through the gates. As a staff member, I was able to create that magic for my campers. As an Assistant Director for the past 3 summers, I have been able to help create that magic for everyone.
At the conclusion of this summer, I am stepping down as Assistant Director; I do so with a heart full of gratitude and excitement for the future. My journey now leads me into the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, where I will be working with children with autism—a calling that aligns deeply with my passion for making a difference in young lives. The skills and experiences I’ve gained at Greene Family Camp have equipped me with invaluable tools for this next chapter, teaching me patience, empathy, and the importance of individualized care.
To all my staff, campers, and entire camp community, I want to express my deepest thanks. You have not only helped shape who I am but have also enriched my life in ways I will forever cherish. The memories we’ve created together will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to returning to see how camp continues to thrive.
As I step away from this chapter, I do so with a sense of fulfillment and optimism for what lies ahead. While my time in this role may be ending, my love for the people and place will bring me back very soon! Thank you for the laughter, the lessons, and the love. Until we meet again, keep creating magic and spreading joy.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Shira Karp, Assistant Director
