What’s new on the GFC Blog?
The Summer of L’Dor V’dor
For me, this was the summer of L’Dor, V’dor. My daughter, Dani, recently returned from five weeks in Eastern Europe and Israel on Garin Greene’s “L’Dor V’Dor” trip. As you might expect, it was the trip of a lifetime.
A Short Reminder from A Kohanim Camper
Camp is great but we all know it isn’t forever. Enjoy the last few days of camp, and let it go out with a boom. As our time slides through our fingers like the water at Hawaiian Falls, we realize camp is as unique as the talent show.
I Believe I Can Fly
Last Thursday night, while most Niviimers were asleep, Cabin D’s beds were empty. Why, you may ask? Because here at camp sometimes amazing opportunities call for a delay in bedtime. My campers were lucky enough to interact with a man named Matan Koch, and to watch him fly.
Now Miles Away, GFC Still Home
My letters home from camp read something like this: “Dear Mom and Dad, Camp is really great. I never knew there were so many Jewish people! Shabbat is pretty. I have a good friend here. Bye!”
Becoming Better Leaders: NFTY-TOR does Mechina
Earlier this summer, the NFTY-TOR regional board and delegates traveled from the great state of Texas to the beautiful URJ Kutz camp in Warwick, New York for NFTY Mechina 2016. At Mechina, the delegations of the nineteen regions of NFTY come together to learn, educate, and of course have fun!
Welcoming the Stranger
Assistant Director Alex Null talks about her planning of the S’ganim trip, and her experience traveling with a bright cohort of campers this session.
One Uber Ride Later, Two Camps to Call Home
Jeremy Rosen, a first year nurse at GFC and URJ Camp Harlam alum, talks about how he came to Greene and his week as a camp nurse. Jeremy lives in San Antonio and works as an RN with the VA Hospital System.
Picking Up Where We Left Off
On Friday night, our unit of S’ganim (entering 9th graders) led our services beautifully at the Beit K’nesset. A group of four boys, Sam, Aaron, Parker and Adam were particularly moving, as they spoke to us together about why they keep coming back to camp, year after year.
A Big Kid’s Letter Home From Camp
Wow! My week at camp was so busy. I am so glad that you sent me to Greene Family Camp and thanks again for the letter from home. Lots of people questioned why I was going to camp as a 50+ adult and nobody could figure out how I was going to spend my time, but it was sooo much fun!
Out of my Element: An Hour at STEM Class
In this series of blog posts, Jessica Dangott, one of our assistant directors, crosses things off of her camp bucket list and tells us about her new camp experience.
