In last week’s Torah portion, Vayakhel discusses the building of the Mishkan, a portable sanctuary. How fitting that we should come together for Mitzvah Weekend this very week.

A small but mighty crew came together to work and begin to prepare the camp for the summer at the place that is a sanctuary for so many of us and our children. Many of us didn’t know each other but we had a common goal. After a delicious Shabbat dinner and some fun mixers, we made our way to the Beit Knesset for a meaningful Shabbat service.

Saturday morning, we had a brief intention-setting session with Rabbi Erin Mason before beginning our work. Our two projects were to clean, prepare, and plant new fruit trees and plants in the garden before Saba Ron’s arrival this summer, and to paint and prepare 15 new trash cans and lids to be placed around camp to keep our space clean. Everyone got to work and we accomplished our goals. Big thanks to Beau Moore and Stephen Ducar for their guidance and expertise.

After dinner Saturday evening, we had a fun game of Magellan’s Trivia with Rachel Abramson, an exciting Havdalah and song session led by Morgan Ducar, and a delicious Israeli cooking class with Aya Margalit. The hummus and shakshuka were *> (chef’s kiss)!

We made new friends, filled our spiritual cups, and left our “sanctuary” a little nicer than we found it. I hope to see you all this summer as we celebrate 50 years of GFC!
